Now money can buy happiness: All-new 2012 Golf R starting under $34,000

It’s the moment Volkswagen enthusiasts have been waiting for: Volkswagen announced that the all-new 2012 Golf R, available in the US for the first time ever, will have a starting MSRP of $33,990.

The 2012 Golf R features the most powerful (and joy-inducing) Golf production engine ever seen in the US. The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine puts out 256 horsepower and 243 pound feet of torque—that’s even more than the GTI. All Golf R models sold in the US will be equipped with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission, and the latest-generation 4Motion all-wheel drive comes standard. This system can divert up to 100 percent of the torque to the rear wheels, if needed.

You may be asking, “But what can all that power and torque do for me?” Answer: it can take you from standing still to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds and transform every drive into a joyride. As if that weren’t reason enough to smile, the 2012 Golf R is also the most fuel-efficient Golf model ever sold in the States, with an estimated fuel economy rating of 19 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway.

  6. So VW I have to say I have loved my Mark VI GTI and wanted the Golf R ….BUT….I cannot spend this kind of money on the Golf R…I am going to be trading in for a ’12 STI and at 316 Hp with 4 wheel drive and about the same fuel economy….shoot even Hyundai has 2.0 4cyl engines with same hp as the Golf R…Love the car but kind of embarassing. Why do not step it up for us folks in the US??? The new Caddy GM is coming out with even puts out 270 Hp????
