The new face of turbo.

You’re looking at the latest in Volkswagen design. Those assertive front headlights and redesigned chrome grille give the new Tiguan a fresh face for 2012. Plus, to complete its sporty look, for the first time the new Tiguan will also feature available factory-installed 19” wheels. Under the hood, the new Tiguan’s standard 200-hp, turbocharged engine now offers an impressive 29 hwy mpg.1 That means you can take any motorway (or mountain way with 4MOTION all-wheel drive available on all models) in stride while making even fewer stops at the gas station.

In the short time it takes to get anywhere, you’ll enjoy interior comforts inside the new Tiguan like a premium 8-way adjustable seat, standard Bluetooth® technology with voice command, an available navigation system with a 30GB hard, and an available touchscreen sound system with an auxiliary input for connecting your iPod® or digital audio player. There’s also up to 56.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down in case you need to bring any of your stuff along for the ride.

And when it comes to safety, Tiguan still has an outstanding record. It earned a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) in both 2010 and 2011. So if you’re looking for a compact SUV that’s not only incredibly spacious, and safe, but also can handle downtown city streets, twisting mountain switchbacks, and the slalom of a supermarket parking lot, you’ll love the new 2012 Tiguan. It’s quick and nimble, just like its namesakes Tiger and Iguana. The big difference is that it lives in the city. Most of the time.

  1. While this looks great and a 4 mpg increase is nice, this car screams for the TDI motor. With the economy and torque, you could probably get a 3500 lbs towing rating and now you have jet ski / snowmobile / motorcycle capabily with 37-40 mpg capability. Seems like a hole in the lineup without it.

    • Hey VW…. knock, knock, knock…. is there anybody home. We want all want to buy a Tiguan. One with a TDI option. You do build cars so people will buy them right? You have the car and have the engine already. Not like you need to do anything special here. Just make the OPTION available to us in the U.S.

    • Couldn’t agree more! 2011 Jetta SportWagen here and I would trade it in tomorrow for a TDI Tiguan

    • I’ve got an ’06 Jetta TDI coming up on 100,000 and will be looking for a new vehicle in the next couple of years. I had CRV before the Jetta and gave it up because of the 25 MPG. I REALLY want a Tiguan TDI. Please build one so I can buy it. I’d even be willing to do an extended test drive of one for you.

  2. Still no Tiguan TDI? I will buy one when it becomes available as a TDI 4motion but not a minute sooner…

  3. Where is the TDI option? Will not consider one until the TDI is available.

  4. TDI Manual PLEASE!!!!!! Love my two door MKVI TDI but we will need a four door soon and this would fit the bill with a TDI. Sorry wont buy one without it.

    • I agree. TDI Manual. PLEASE!!!!!! There are no other manual SUVs. BMW X3 is gone and never had a diesel. VW needs to see the sales of the Sportwagen TDI versus the gasoline models. The dealer in town says that TDI sales the Sportwagen.

  5. I’m with the other people that have posted about a TDI for the Tiguan. It would sell like crazy with the current gas prices. Even a hybrid….

  6. Yes, A TDI is badly needed and it seems so much like a natural progression… As far as not getting one without, I have to disagree and give in.

  7. I also have been looking for VW to bring a TDI Tiguan to the States. I understand they are available in the islands just south of Florida. But not here. I have owned 11 VW’s and most have been diesels. I’ve e=mailed VW and ask about TDI Tiguans but no luck.

  8. I’m ready to buy a Tiguan when the TDI version is available in the US. I won’t be buying anything until then!

  9. I have the VW Jetta TDI. Really like the TDI. I also would like to buy a Tiguan, but will wait until it comes with the TDI. Please bring it to the USA soon. It is obvious it would be a top seller.

  10. So, every comment is “We want a TDi Tiguan!” At the LA Auto Show when the Tiguan was unveiled, every single person looking at it said the same thing. The VW people standing near the Tiguan were literally surrounded by people asking this same question. It seems every other Tiguan market gets the TDI, and it seems pretty popular in those markets. The TDi Tiguan is rated to tow 5500 lbs (2500 kgs) too, which seems the sweet spot for most people’s actual towing needs. And it should get about 30/40, which would make it the clear efficiency leader in all SUVs. And the TDI is very inexpensive, much cheaper then the Hybrid premium for any non-gas-suck SUVs on the market. Its the most obvious slam dunk I’ve ever seen in the automotive world. I need one, and all three of my kids need TDi Tiguans. So where are they then? VW? Anyone listening? I’ve looked into all the current TDi offerings by VW and Audi, and its only the Tiguan TDi that fits my needs. So I continue to wait. But all automakers are seeing this increase in demand for efficiency. The 3 cylinder Ford direct injection turbo, even the GM small turbos, Fiat that has many really nice small turbo diesels, … VW, your window of opportunity will not last forever. Very few businesses get away with being so deaf to customer demand.

  11. My wife want a Tiguan bad, but its got to have a TDI before I am interested.

  12. I too have NOT purchased the Tiguan because it does not yet have the TDI. My last two cars are diesel and I doubt I will by another that is not. Wake up VW! America is demanding diesels and hardly anyone is listening…..

  13. I amy VERY interested in buying the new Tiquan. sure hoping they will have the air conditioned front seats. I am throughly enjoed the heated seats, but also who enjoyed the air conditioned one also!

  14. I would only get this with a TDi. Come one VW

  15. I’m also interested in a TDI version – when will we see one in North America?

  16. I have owned 11 VW’s and most of them were diesel. I can’t understand why VW doesn’t bring more diesel models to the States. I would love to see the Tiguan with a diesel (TDI). I currently have a gas Tiguan that is the best VW I have ever owned but it would be even better if it had a TDI engine. On the open road I get around 28 miles to the gallon but I rather get 42. VW marketing needs to wake up and give the customer what they want if they expect to out sell Toyota in the next few years.

  17. You ALL do realize the price of the Tiguan with a TDI would be crazy right? I don’t think VW would use a TDI out of the Jetta or something of that line and it would end up being crazy! I have a Touareg VR6 – and the price between that, the V8, and the TDI is silly. It would be cool, just saying I doubt it will happen – plus, who wants a great truck with GREAT gas mileage and torque anyway? lol

    • I understand that the diesel that is in the Passat is the same one they use in the Tiguan. If they can put it in the Passat why not the Tiguan.

  18. Seriously, we’re ready for diesel here in America. Come on VW, what is the issue here? Guess I’ll go look at some Kias that get better mileage than the 2011 Tiguan.

  19. I am waiting for VW to bring their pick-up to the states then I’ll get serious about another VW. I presently have a 2008 GTI.

  20. Was Ist Los? Hello isn’t anyone at VW listening. I too like everyone else want the wundebar new 2012 Tiguan…But with a TDI or better yet a TDI Hybrid….”Build it and We will come” Wie Geht’s Baby?

Listen to us! Screw the overpaid MBA marketing bean counter. Hell with the Chicken Tax…Build the Amarok in the USA. and give us a Truck too! if you had these two and that sweet Bulli, Braddah the surfahs here in Hawaii would eat that in a surf van model up. Sweet! maybe you could sell 800,000 vehicles a year. NO truck in America! Never make those numbers without em! Need that Zeitgeist Gunther!!!

Until then maybe a Mini countryman or wait till your cousin Audi builds a Q3 or maybe wait till Porsche builds that “Cajun” buggah!!!

    Aloha!
    Waiting for the TDI Tiguan!

  21. I agree with all on here…VW please give us the TDi. Better yet surprise us and offer the 170hp TDi. I would be one of the first in line making a pre order.

  22. PLEASE ….. make the TDI as an option , I would wait 6 month for one.
.OR how about a TDI Q5 like the had at The LA car show 38MPG+ , that would be a ticket

  23. I couldn’t care less about diesel because it’s awful. 2.0 TSi all the way! Yeah baby!

  24. I might actually upgrade from a jetta if i TDI was ever offered!

    • Unfortuantely, it is a bit more cmcelioatpd than Marjorie makes it sound. You cannot seperate cooking oil into biodiesel and glycerine buy simply heating it up. Biodiesel is a compound know as methyl-esters or ethyl-esters, the distinction coming from which alcohol you use with your catalyst. In order to produce biodiesel you have to break the chemical bond in the oil. Below I will outline the process. If you want more specifics, please email me and I will be happy to send them to you.1 Collect used oil2 dry the oil- Heat to a temperature greater than 212degrees.3 Titrate the oil. you will need to know the ph of your oil in order to use the right amount of catalyst4 Mix Methanol or Ethanol with Cataylst (NaOH). Produce Methoxide5 Mix with oil for aprox 1-2 hrs.6 pump into seperating tank takes aprox 24 hrs to settle out.7 pump the biodiesel into a water wash tank. let settle again.8 pump into storage tank or your fuel tank.I have been making biodiesel for the past 8 years with various rigs that I have made myself. The simplist was 3) 55 gallon drums, and old water heater and 2) water pumps from habor frieght. I use 100% in my truck and then mix a 55 gallon drum into my heating oil tank. My final cost per gallon is about $.50 per gallon not counting my labor and the propane I use to dry the oil.

  25. TDI it’s what the people want.

  26. I’m looking for my next car but I’m with the rest of the guys here, TDI is MIA in the USA.. WTF?

As for the possibility of the Golf R – without DSG I’m not getting one.

  27. I currently own a 2009 Jetta TDI, and I’m currently looking for something bigger that would get similar mileage. I’ve been looking at the SportWagen, but would much rather have a Tiguan TDI.

  28. I love my wife’s TDI sportwagon. Put a TDI in the Tiguan and I will trade in my Subaru Outback.

    • I have had no isuses with the audio system in my 2010 Prius and the Samsung Focus. Prior to the WP7 phone, the car was paired with a Windows Mobile Touch Diamond 2. Music playback on the TD2 required an extra step of pushing a Start button on the audio system touch screen. With the Focus, the phone simply begins playing when I select Bluetooth as the music source.I paired the Focus with the car without issue and was delighted that it worked with the contact list that had been downloaded from the Windows Mobile phone. The list of contacts in the car does not include those from the Windows Phone that are imported from my Facebook account of course because it came from my Windows Mobile phone, but the non-Facebook contacts are the same between the two phones. I suppose I could delete the car contact list and reinstall it from the Focus so it includes the Facebook contacts too, but so far, I haven’t needed to.

  29. Ha – my wife’s bug is dying & we’re looking at the Tiguan… but really want the TDI – I think it’s about unanimous! C’mon VW! TDI please!

  30. Take a look above, you’d think they would get the message. TDI TDI TDI.

  31. What kind of mpg will TDI get?

  32. I just returned from France. The majority of VW’s on the road in Provence and Paris have the TDI engine. VW obviously builds many cars for the Euro market with the efficient and powerful TDI engine (CC, Passat wagon, Tiguan TDI, Scirocco). Granted, diesel fuel costs less than petrol in France, but not by much. So VW, are you getting the message? Send us some of your better styled vehicles with the TDI engines, manual or DSG ! Americans will buy it. The New Jetta and Passat are ugly and non-sporty. I’ve driven both in diesel format.
[We rented a TDI -manual 5-door Routan and were rewarded with phenomenal mileage, a huge moonroof and comfortable, quiet ride. ]
    Owner: 2002 VW Passat 1.8T wagon = 91,000 miles

  33. Contacted VW of America. They continue to say they have no plans to offer the TDI in the US at this time. I couldn’t be more disappointed. While I suspect that is a “party line” they must have to maintain current model sales, all of the responses here and other sites seem to be enough ammo to offer and sell every example they import. Hey Volkswagen, can you say CHA CHING$$$??? As stated above, it is a no brainer situation. By the way, of the 60 or 70 Tiguans I saw on my vacation in Europe, all but a couple were diesels. Of course nearly every car in Europe is a diesel. By the way, if you want to be even more disappointed with what VW offers us vs. elsewhere, go to VW UK. There you can see how the US is getting the short end of the product line.

    • Sometimes you have to read between the lines. If there was a Tiguan Diesel that got about 40 mpg, what would be the competition? VW is probably itching to release a Tiguan TDI but don’t forget about all the possible roadblocks they would have to go though between other automakers as well as the Government, not to mention oil lobbyists, and whoever else is gonna lose some of their slice of the pie. Why isn’t their a Subaru STI/Mitsubishi style Hybrid on the Market? If toyota made a “Supra style” Prius ” their would be no competition.

    • Mark From what I hear and read Chevy Cruze and vouairs vehicles from Mazda are supposed to be offering diesel in 2013. I would definitely like to see a widespread of vehicles offered in diesel but I’d also want to know the difference in real world cost of ownership between diesel vehicles requiring diesel exhaust fluid versus the real world fuel economy of gasoline vehicles caused by blending today’s gas with ethanol which can reduce fuel economy by up to 35%. Either way it costs more to drive than it ever did before. A Volkswagen with diesel costs $7000 more than the same car with the standard gasoline engine. As of current date only Volkswagen cars and Ram 3500 trucks combine diesel engines and manual transmissions together in the same vehicles. I’d also like to see more vehicles with real stick shifts but mid level vehicles with stick shift are harder to find than ever before also. August 11 2011 at 9:34 PM rate up rate down

  34. I’m in the market NOW. I like the size and price of the Tiguan, but I would want to have it in a TDI. I called Customer Service, an was told they are “thinking about it”! I mentioned this blog page, and was informed that they have people that keeps track of it and appreciated my feed back on this. If they want my money, they have to give me what I want! What about “the customer is always right”? I would hate to go out and spend the money on a gas burner, and find out weeks / months later they are coming out with a TDI. I would be one unhappy camper.

    • Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate it!

    • Diesel. I bhogut my first diesel truck back in ’92 when they were still a bit of a novelty. Driving around a big rig that got 22 mpg and could pull stumps (but had very little acceleration) was cutting edge cool. And back then the price per gallon for diesel was WAY less than gas. Then diesel engines grew in popularity with the recreation market (RVers and the like) and magically diesel became less cheap. Before long it was the same price as gas, and now it’s more. Supply and demand, or perhaps more accurately, just demand. Yes, the East Coast still heats with oil (diesel, essentially, from what I’m told). If we got those folks over to another form of heating it would make sense that diesel prices could come down due to decreased demand. However, that won’t happen because as you noted, it’s greed that drives the price of fuel, including diesel. We clearly need more viable options. Hybrid technology looks good on the surface, but what of the impact to our resources to manufacture the humongo batteries in those things? Yeah, the whole issue makes my head hurt.

  35. When the Tiguan was originally launched in Canada, the TDI was supposed to follow two years later. Wrong again. I have owned a ’85 and ’06 Jetta with diesel power and loved them, but need something a little larger. Rented Passat Wagon TDI on two trips to Europe and absolutely loved it (4 adults, 1000 lbs of luggage and cruising on the highway at 150 klm with 40+ mpg). Currently driving a ’09 Passat Wagon, but want a TDI. Since WV wont’ be making the Passat Wagon for North America, the Tiguan is the logical choice. A smart, safe and right sized 4X4 with TDI = no competition. Built them in the new plant in Chattanooga where you already are building Passats with TDI.

  36. I totally agree with everyone else here. I drool over the UK and Germany sites with all the choices of vehicles with the TDI. My husband and I drove the Passat and Toureg. We would have bought the Passat, but we live in a colder area and were hoping for an AWD vehicle like the Audi quattro. We drove the Toureg, which has the AWD and TDI, but the price is way out of our range. The Tiguan, even with the higher price point with the TDI would be a perfect middle ground for us. We looked at the BMW and Mercedes models also, and really still liked the VW. I know the Goverment has been stupid pushing bio fuel cars instead of clean diesel vehicles since we already have the infrastructure for distribution of that fuel, but please start offering more choices here. I was told by many of the dealers we spoke with that the waiting list was long for the Passat with the TDI or they could not keep them in stock. That should give you a hint. We are starting to learn. We still have not made our decision of what we are going to buy.

  37. It seems pretty evident to me… VW needs to offer the Tiguan with the TDI option. If we want it bad enough to post here, there are probably many, many other who would like to see it as well.

    • I’d like VW to fix the way the car drives – how in the world did they get so many people to purchase a car that drives so terrible.

  38. I’ve been waiting so long for a Tiguan TDI, I bought a Golf TDI, was that the strategy? Seriously what are you guys waiting for? TDI with AWD!!

    • Yes, waiting for a 2014 TiguanXL TDI SEL. My name for the “a little bigger” Tiguan (WheelB+4″ & width+3″) with the 200 HP TDI and 7-spd DSG transmission + 4Motion Drive. We have a 2009 Tiguan SEL with everything but the hitch and a 2009 GTI Autoban equiped with 6-Spd DSG. Love both autos but need to downsize in a year and a half (Fall 2013 for 2014). Our best bet is a to consolidate into a more fuel efficient new Tig. Both 2009′s are OK on gas – Tig ~ 27 mpg on highway and the GTI ~ 32 mpg. If VW wants to own the world they need some more products targeted first at the USA market. “Com’on VW – get that new plant cranking out more than the Passat – although nice it is a smaller market segment.”

  39. Add me to to the list , buy it with a TDi …..make it an option … would wait for 6 months for this

  40. I just wanted to show my support and say that the Tiguan should have a TDI option. The people have spoken. So the question now is, when will we see the TDI? Very soon I hope. It is time to make it happen. Think about all the current VW owners and the potential future newcomers. Don’t let us down. TDI all the way.
