The answer is yes – the VW Golf R is coming to America.

VW Golf R
For most VW enthusiasts, we could have ended this article at the headline. For those of you who don’t know and those who want the details, continue reading. North American VW enthusiasts have been asking for it, and now they’re going to get it. The most powerful production Golf to date is on its way to the shores of America in the form of the VW Golf R. And with 50 more horsepower than the award winning 2.0L TSI®, this is the VW a lot of Dub loyalists have been waiting for. Here are a few juicy details to tide you over until its release.

The Golf R is fitted with a turbocharged, 2.0L inline 4, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Power is delivered to all four wheels via the Haldex 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system and exits the Golf R thVW Golf Rrough a set of dual exhaust tips, centered at the rear. Drivers will notice right off the line that the turbocharged engine blasts the Golf R from zero to 60 – and the bigger brakes bring it back to zero – faster than ever.

Available in 2-door or 4-door body styles, the R will feature a number of model-specific touches. On the outside, it’s equipped with unique 18-inch alloy wheels, R badging and body kit, while the interior packs in signature upholstery, doorsills, shift knob and steering wheel. The Golf R will also come with dual- zone Climatronic® air-conditioning and leather seating surfaces, standard. The Golf R will be released in the U.S. in limited numbers for a very limited time.

  1. I am so excited, although I just recently brought a 2010 GTi, I am so excited, please please please don’t over price it. Cheers.

    • Please, Please, Please, Volkswagen why do we always get cheated and can’t get the best Golf ever without the best transmission VW has ever made? Why doesn’t this car have a DSG option?? Even the New Beetle which isn’t even a sports car has a DSG option. It just doesn’t make sense. I was really considering buying one of these because in Japan where I just came from they will have a DSG, as well as Europe. But for some crazy reason we can’t have it. And we are the biggest car market in the world!
On top of that we can’t get the upgraded leather Recaro seats which are the same ones in the Audi TTRS and other nicer cars. And then to top it off and cheat us even more they take off the LED rear lights that all the BM’rs and Audi’s have now. Please VW think things over and give us some options that we really want here in America.

    • @Daniel Schaeler The Golf R is a pumped-up version of the GTI. It’s not meant to be a sports car. It’s meant to be a peppy, quick, little, practical car (a.k.a. a hot hatch.) The fun comes from the feel of the feel of throwing shifts and taking corners at decently fast speeds. It doesn’t shout about its 0-60 times with LED lighting that screams, “Look at me! I have attention issues!” because, again, that’s not what the GTI is about.

  2. I’m getting one. Sorry Mk6, you’ve been a great car, but i gotta go snowboarding sometimes. And i like being able to accelerate through turns. =D

    Thanks V Dub!

  3. i like it !!! en esperant quil soit disponible au canada !

  4. Give us a 4Motion TDI Golf!

    • That’s what I want! Any word on what kind of mpg the 4Motion gets? I heard almost similar results of the regular TDI!

    • YES PLEASE! I not sure what the heck the marketing team at VW is thinking. You give us a Golf TDI with great gas mileage, but won’t offer the 4 motion package already being sold in Europe! I would sell my Prius tomorrow! Are you taking any polls in America on demand for this product?

    • 4motion TDI is like an oxymoron in my opinion. the 4motion system would eat up gas and the weight of the drivetrain would reduce fuel economy as well

but it would be an interesting combo, just prolly not realistically going to happen

    • Yeah…a 4-Motion Golf TDI with roof rails like the Audi A3. My checkbook is ready if they bring that to the USA.

    • I WANT A 4Motion TDI Golf ALSO

    • Yes! We rented one to go on a road trip through northern Italy. It was my favorite part of the trip, and I love Italy. “What’s that? It’s an extra 20 euros a day to ad another driver? I guess I’ll have to drive the whole time. Damn!”

And actually the mileage was still great. You know, they use their liters per 100 kilometers conversion, but I did some math and figured we were getting about 40 MPG.

Can I throw in one more condition?

      TDI, 4Motion, MANUAL!

    • Same here. WTF, TDI 4-Mo USA -please!!

    • Yes! USA needs an AWD car that gets decent mileage-the Golf TDI 4 Motion is it! Put me down for one. My wife just bought a new Golf TDI but no 4 Motion.

    • 3 door, 4Motion TDI Golf with a six speed (long) in Canada Please. Or block the UK site they have choice!

  5. Better have vw signature indigo color gauges! unlike 2010 GTI

    • We have the Tiquan with 4 Motion. No loss in gas miles and it holds the road like a Porche! Love it! Don’t know about the R but have been thinking about replacing my Passat with a GTI. May now have to hold off… I want something fun to drive. My Passat is a blast with the 3.6 Liter and paddle shifters in Sport Mode!

  7. Umm, for anyone asking for Christmas Ideas, you can contribute funds to the “I am getting a Golf R” now ok thanks.

  8. A bittersweet announcement for me. The brilliant DSG transmission is sorely needed here…I will not purchase otherwise.

  10. The only thing that made me hesitate about buying a mk5 R32 was the lack of an available manual transmission here in the US, the new R however is a superior car in nearly every way (and will now be offered only in a manual so I gather). I have been waiting patiently for the VW/Audi USA to bring the R here, as well as considering going to Germany personally to have one shipped home. I’m glad the wait is over, though I may still make the trip to rent one on the autobahn just for the memories of not having to abide by speed limits in this car. But I digress…

WHEN CAN I HAVE MY KEYS??? Car and driver, Jalopnik and Motortrend are all still calling it a 2012 release, does that mean I have to wait another year or more to get my hands on one? I have been agonizing about this ever since I drove the mk5 R and would have bought it if my left foot wasn’t so lonely without a clutch pedal.

I predict that this is what held back the sales of the previous R32, and make the R(20) sell like hotcakes. This car is for enthusiasts; while the DSG is a wonderful piece of engineering, enthusiasts want pure mechanical control over some things.

We have had enough waiting VW; no more obfuscation, obstruction and procrastination please. Just give me the date, so I can start counting the days.

Many thanks from VW faithful in the United States,
(unless this turns out to be another kind of hoax)

    • Taylor Sims says “I predict that this is what held back the sales of the previous R32, and make the R(20) sell like hotcakes. This car is for enthusiasts; while the DSG is a wonderful piece of engineering, enthusiasts want pure mechanical control over some things.”

Well you may prefer a manual and you may be an “enthusiast” you do not speak for all enthusiasts. Further the R32 was limited to 5,000 cars in the US, and at $35k in 2008. That would be $35,500 today but the R will likely be more than that. While the R32 had all the top line options for 2008, the R (as described anyway) does not offer an all leather interior, LED lights, top line audio, or DSG. I’m sure it will be a really nice car, but for that money I don’t want to compromise.

    • I was told the reason for the North American VW cars were not being built with LED’s was because of the replacement cost if you crack the lens. 350 bucks….LOL

  12. Great! but how much is it going to weigh? The R32 was an absolute PIG! Unless the weigh is no more than 3000lbs, the Golf R isn’t going to be as “hot” as we all want/need it to be…

    • Hi, the 4-door hatchback weighs in Germany 1.521 kg (3.353 lbs) and the the 2-door version is a little bit lighter. Hope I assisted.

  13. I absolutely loved the Golf I used to have. They are a great car to drive, and everyone should own at least one in their lifetime! Can’t wait to see this one in the US.

  14. Hell yeah baby! My new ride coming Q4 2011. Saving up NOW!

  15. This is excellent news. Will we see the European options/equipped version of the R offered here is the states? Just make their version legal for our highways and I’m good.

  16. Finally the latest Golf R is coming to America and hopefully the rest of the R-line as well,I’m very interested to do a test drive on the R..

  17. hey can you tell me dates ? aproxx txs.

  18. I bought my car too soon…. but I still love my 2010 TDI. But I would love if someone could buy me this. <3

  19. I currently own a candy white 2008 R32 and my wife owns a 2009 candy white GTI. We are both excited about the Golf R being available in America. Although the DSG gearbox is a wonderful thing, we have both longed for a 6-speed box with three pedals on the floor. She loves the blue color as well. Hopefully one or two of these will grace our driveway in the future.

  20. Looking forward to it!

  21. Now if only i can find an extra $30,000 or so laying around I’ll be set

  22. Why is the HP less? http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/volkswagen-world/news/179 The Euro one (see the url) has more hp. Also why is there no dsg and why is this only in limited number again? Eh -_- I’ll keep my R32 MKV

    • I’m with you Andrew, the lease on my MKV R32 is up in June 2011 and with only a $19,200 dollar buyout I would be crazy to not keep my R32 and I am certainly not going to trade it in for an extra 15 HP!!! I love the growl my my 6 you will never get that sound from a 2.0 EVER!!!!

      Kyle

    • Kyle M Fegley Golf R20 is so much lighter and faster then R32 it has mb 15 hp more but car does more than that compare to R32. And also we all know if u get a golf CHIPPED it which make up those specs up to 300 hp and torque…

  23. It’s about time America finally got some Euro-spec flair!

  24. Thanks, this is a great news. Placing my order soon…..

  25. Anyone know when these will be in dealerships?

  26. What are the 0 to 60 times? When will they be released?

  27. I wonder if this will come with the nicer RNS 510 Nav instead of the small low res RNS 315 in the GTI

  28. We miss the R32! Hopefully this will be as fun. :) When is it coming out?!?! Will an Audi-style DSG be available for the Golf R? And it seems crazy to ask, but WOW would I be a fan of a convertible version of the Golf R (as a current Golf Cabrio owner).

  29. I hope it doesn’t cost as much as the R32 this car engine is all over the place so its cheap the car is the same as the S3 TT-S it has a lot of time in the market, so it should be considerably cheaper than the old R32 maybe it can stay in the 20 thousands…

Number one in my list to buy.

  31. It would be nice to have the same ecu programming for my 2010 Wolfsburg Jetta

  32. i knew i should of waited.

  33. Amen this car is coming state-side! After months of yelling, kicking and screaming no less ;) Woot Woot! As a former MKV R32 owner, I can say that you all will LOVE this MKVI Golf-R and its stealth performance. Driving an 11′ MKVI TDI now and loving it…

  34. Any pricing on the R20 yet?

  35. Please don’t call it the Golf R. R20 or GTI-R is much better.

  37. when will the R starts selling in LA?

  38. So I’m guessing we aren’t going to have the full 265hp TSI engine, nor the 19″ rims, nor the Race Seats…damn lol! Will we at least get the LED lights in both the front and rear?

  39. It’s about time. Time to fire up the savings….

  40. where’s the dsg? if thisa car has a DSG i will trade in my GTI and order one as soon as it comes out.

  41. Thank you Volkswagen, thank you! In 2.5 years when I turn 25 and my insurance drops, I WILL be buying one of these!

  43. Lovely car, I will buy it in a heart beat but I will not. Why?

    It seems that:

1.- it doesn’t has the DSG transmission only manual. 32% of drivers will prefer the DSG
2.- it doesnt has the real top of the line stereo system, I will love to have the attractive RNS-510
3.- It doesnt come with the adaptive suspension
4.- It is not coming with the impressive LED lights.

Why VW always has to give us the semi nice car when in Europe they have the real “R” car?

    Sad.

    • If it’s one thing I can 99% gaurantee is that the US will ALWAYS have an Automatic, because as one says 32% want a DSG meaning 32% either don’t know how to drive a manual or are just lazy. Kidding, I have a DSG in my TDI Beetle and love it but would have loved to have a manual. I am sure they will have that as an option because all of US VWs have either an Auto gearbox or a DSG as an option. The GTIs and R32s had it and couldn’t see VWOA changing that to manual only because they would lose alot (est. 32% or more) of sales on the Golf R. I’m sure like the GTIs, they will have a decent sound system. I have to agree with you on the LEDs though, I love them myself. Been looking to do a conversion on my NB with some LEDs

    • I can’t wait for the R to come here and am ecstatic it is going to be available with a manual transmission. I drive in way too much stop and go rush hour traffic to not have complete control over the transmission and have the ability to push the clutch in and coast when I want.

  44. Golf R ojala lo traigan a Mexico!!!

  45. Oh yah a manual trans R is Back!

  46. I can’t wait to get one at the Dealership I work for. VW of South Charlotte.

  47. This is going to be one super popular car, no news on pricing yet but feel free to check out the site I just launched golf-r-forum.com its for Golf R enthusiasts in North America we will be posting the latest news on there as well.

  48. A 2.0 liter 4 cylinder? NO, we want the 3.2 back, we want 6 cylinders!!!

    • I agree, I think they should make it an option. 2.0TSI for the eco-minded people. 3.2L for us sport enthusiast-minded :D Better yet, have a Golf R-SI version (RSI) and put twin turbos on those engines. I would drool all day before I ever even drove it.

  49. not everyone is agree with a manual transmission, the people we love the best and the better the
vw dsg transmission is faster shifts and better option to the U.S. public. should give DSG transmission as an option.

  50. Any idea what the price tag is going to look like on one of these Glorious German Machines?

  51. i see what i will get after the GTI!

  52. Hello, Need more info. on VW R in order to purchase same. Availability in Wash. State Zip 98340. Question: Will an automatic Transmission be available in the “R” as I am in my 70′s and tired of manual shifting. Ready to test drive and buy.

    Cheers,

    Mike from Hansville Wa. 98340

  53. All (almost all) points checked for me: manual, 4 door, AWD, hatchback. 4 cyl is all need so it looks better than the R32. The price mucst be better as well ;) Availability?
Well, if the price is too high (or the edition too limited), an AWD TDI would be great. VW or A3, eitherway.

  54. Why limited numbers? Open the flood gates! We all want more power.

  55. From wikipedia: “(re. Formula 1 racing) By 1994, the semi-automatic transmission was dominant in terms of gearbox technology, and the last F1 car fitted with a manual gearbox raced in 1995.”

I’ll pay extra for the DSG transmission. I won’t buy a 6 speed, I live in the city, its a pain.

  56. the vw jetta and passat are better then alll vw cars you ppl should bring the jetta sport and the jetta its self is way too cheap i payed 17k last year for my jetta s but i sold it and got the jetta tdi :) 25 grand althoe im waiting 4 the jetta gli to come out :D

    • The 2012 GLI was at the Chicago auto show. It is a very nice car. But pimped out to about 29k it is overpriced and not worth +6k more than my 2010 WB Jetta (with DSG and just added APR stage I).

  57. ohh yea… bring the pheaton to america too.

  58. And the new touareg.. XD

  59. So disappointed it is being offered only with a manual trans. I would have bought it in a heartbeat!

  60. No DSG means no sale. I think this is another case of VW offering cars for the US configured as what they think consumers should want, rather than what they actually do want. Since this is built on the Golf platform like the GTI, allowing a transmission choice would be easy. Its not manufacturing but VW marketing that has removed such choices. Since the price is likely going to be > $35k, its hard to justify that without all the top of the line Golf/GTI options. Also “leather surfaces” sounds like it does not even offer leather seats, but a mix, again a bad choice. Its very likely a very nice car, I’m sure I’d love one to replace my 95 Jetta VR6, but for that sort of money not getting everything you want, when those options clearly are possible but just not allowed, is not the way to convince me to make such a purchase.

    • I had the R32:

PROS: 1) Fast, 2) standard features, 3) AWD, 4) exhaust note
CONS: 1) Thirst for premium fuel, 2) PURCHASE PRICE!, 3) DSG (reputation for long-term unreliability, 4) weight, 5) anonymity

      Lessons learned, VW?

    • I’m so glad its only being offered in manual transmission. The way it should be.

    • Personally, I’m thrilled the Golf R will be a 6-speed manual. DSG is nice, but I find it disconnects one too much from the driving experience.

  61. Thank you VW!! I have been waiting for a European car company to recognize that there is a strong minority of petrolheads in the US that want a sporty compact but functional car that is made well. I always hate to read that the US market keeps getting a detuned or less sporty version of their European counterpart (take note GM and Ford… I wanted the Focus RS!), and have purposefully not bought from those companies as a result. Now that VW finally is bringing a worthwhile, sporty car, and a great one at that (I love the GTI), I don’t care if it is $35K; quality and fun don’t come cheap! I would rather pay for a really well-built, fun, exciting car than a detuned, plasticy, cheapo bucket. Too many people want a ferrari for the price of a pinto… give me a break…

Thanks again VW, I will be waiting for the reality to show up at the dealership!

  62. A no show at NAIAS. Promoting more green or rather blue. Too bad not much excitement at the VW exhibit.

  63. Im sorry, but if VW of America does do something soon, their going to lose their diesel sales. Fiat, through Chysler has commited to bringing more diesel engines to North America, and over and over, VW falls behind and watches. I bet you would get more sales with the GTD than the R golf. The diesel powered GTI brings you almost near GTI performance, with great fuel economy. As we pull out of the recession and gas prices begin to climb again, watch as fuel economy becomes the heated topic again. Yes, the FSI engine produces great power for the fuel economy, but you still can’t get 1200km/tank out of the 2.0T engine compared to the 170HP 2.0 TDI engine available in the GTD. So please VW, if you’re reading this, bring the GTD to North American for a limited time, and see what happens, i bet you it’ll sell like hot cakes. If you want proof, read this forum. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=293372

  64. Yes this will be a pricey car! But with that being said VW should allow transmission options. This was there mistake when the mkv r32 was sold in the US, but was offered in Europe with either the DSG or 6 speed manual. They sold every car they shipped over, but there where some cars still sitting on dealership lots in late 2009. If your not going to give us an option when ordering then just build say 2500 manual cars and 2500 DSG cars and call it a day.

  65. Agree with John Galloway, i just recently purchased a 2011 GTI with DSG for it is my daily car and needed the auto for traffic and when i heard about the R coming here, i was really excited and would absolutely trade in my GTI for it until the news broke that it will only come with a 6 speed. VW can just never get it right, the mk5 R should have been offered with both, thats why they couldnt get them off dealer lots and this one should be offered with DSG as at LEAST an option because if it did, youd have a sale right here, until then, ill stick to my GTI.

Also, thank goodness the VR6 was dropped from the golf platform because it was just a terrible design and looking forward to finally being dropped from VW altogether. Minus the sound, terribly inefficient and would just dull the entire platform especially in the smaller cars.

As for a fresh idea for VW, offer the Golf R with a track day special for the more hardcore folk like Renault does with the Megane R26-R. Lighter, 300 hp, 4 wheel drive without a a front wheel drive bias which they need to do away with regardless and semi slick tires. Or a big power Focus RS rival. Now that would be impressive

  66. No DSG. Hmmmm no sale!!!!
    No LED lights. Hmmmmm
    No Adaptive suspension.
No top of the line radio.
    Detuned engine!!!!,

What is going on here? Always VW trying to send something to America completely dull in comparison of the European Real car. SAD!!!!

The competition is brutal and VW is just kidding around.

If VW wants to be consider seriously they need to take the bull by the horns and invest money to bring different options for the Golf R.

There are people (like me) that is going to like to have everything in there (DSG, top stereo, LED’s,etc….) and other more down to earth customers that are going to buy the basic model.

A recommendation to VW. Pre-sell the car making lot’s of noise with a list of customers willing to place money down (just to reserve it) they can do it six months in advance to know exactly how many they need and which models they need to bring in.

  67. You just lost me as a customer. I have a 2007 GTI with DSG. You get where I’m going with this?

I like my GTI — but the next car I buy will have more power. A 260HP GTI sounds just like what I’m looking for. As soon as I found out about this car, I wanted one. Until I read the only tranny is a manual. I love manumatic boxes and have no intention to learn standard just for VW. Offer the R with DSG and you’ll keep me as a customer…

    • the VW golf has always been about performance not all the stupid stuff that a lot of Americans think they need. With the VW Golf R20 it is all about performance so that is what they are giving us. If you care so much about the other stuff just get a jetta. This is a man’s car.

  68. Pingback: The answer is yes – the VW Golf R is coming to America. | Auto News

  69. I have to agree with a lot of people here in that DSG must be an option, VW will eliminate a ton of buyers by not offering it. I was able to lease a MB C300 for 30K OTD with DSG and I do it again if no DSG on this car.

  70. No DSG? No way. Count me out.

I just test drove a Subaru STI and then a GTI, and what I took away from the experience was that the DSG was simply amazing. I never thought that I would be willing to give up the STI’s 105hp advantage for a GTI, but the DSG made all the difference in the world.

I sure hope that VW reconsiders giving us an option.

  71. Finally – when will this be available :)

  72. Let’s see, in Europe the R has 266hp, so we’re going to get one that is slightly de-tuned at around 250hp (50 over the 200hp GTi motor). No DSG? While a lot of enthusiasts seem to still think that manual is the way to go, it has been proven that the DSG shifts quicker than a human can any day. No LED taillights? While not a huge issue why couldn’t they be brought here? KIA has a model that includes them for goodness sake!

The car’s design will be 2 years old before it even hits our shores. All at probably around a $10,000 premium over a GTi. I’m sure that there will be a lot of people that buy it but VW lost me I think.

    • I have heard the merits of the DSG transmission many times. However, a TRUE Manual Transmission with a clutch pedal is SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE for me to drive. Plus, I drive in a lot of rush hour traffic and find the ability to coast (by pushing the clutch in) or shifting up or down several gears at a time (accelerate in 2nd then shift to 4th or 5th), makes the drive so much better.

I agree with VW bringing over both choices, but apparently that isn’t going to happen, those who want the DSG can always get the Audi, as it will only be available in a DSG.

    • You’ve hit the nail on the head. I just got back from Zurich and I drove a brand new Golf R for the last week with the DSG transmission. It was incredible. We took it into the mountains in cities and it was fantastic. Didn’t miss the manual one bit. Shifting was fast and responsive and power was always there. Anybody wanting a manual over it hasn’t driven this machine. Always seems we get the leftovers when it comes to these kinds of things. I will most likely take a pass because it’ll be yesterday’s news by the time we can get it. Too bad VW.

  73. Breaks my heart that the MK6 will not have a VR6 engine for the GTI, I grew up around that and cherished everything about a GTI with a VR6 and stick shift. Instead now it will be a powerless Whiny automatic economy car. So dissapointed I was actually excited that MK6 would have a 3.6 Vr6 but no.

    • The GTI never should have had a VR6 engine. The GTI has traditionally been powered by a small but potent engine. if you want a front heavy gas wasting, expensive to modify, over priced golf, then buy a used MKV R32. especially when gas is over $3.50 a gallon.

  74. I’ve lived in major cities in the u.s. and i can only remember a couple of occasions where i hated having a stick shift. That said, i only buy cars with manual transmission. It’s easy to learn and it’s a lot of fun. In my opinion, a car with that much power is only rewarding when it’s a stick. I found DSG to be boring and useless. To each his own, but i am 6-speed all the way. I can’t wait to test drive this machine.

  75. finally… i have been dreaming for this for years, i wasn’t able to afford the last one, but this one i will save up all my deployment money to get. i can’t wait.

  76. I’m still going to get this car. DSG is great but I wouldn’t mind a 6 speed. but i mean you kind of saw it coming with the lack of options compared to Europes golf R. all manufacturers do it. I mean look at the mitsubishi evos. they offer the fq 360 and 400. all we get is a 300hp (japans base evo basically),
Same with the Bora V6 4motion. I would of loved to owned one but all jettas in america were only fwd. I am disappointed it wont come with led tails but that wont stop me from getting a pair from europe and having them shipped. overall im happy that the R is coming to the US and Ill take what i can get.

  77. Thank you so much!!! It’s like the R32 coming back! Thanks for giving us the option of a manual model. Automatics just take the fun out of driving a car for me. Don’t like the, “for a limited time,” deal though.

I like this idea though of bringing European models over to the USA. I’m still missing the Scrirroco ;)

  78. I keep seeing reviews like this;
    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/07/2012-volkswagen-golf-r-first-drive-review-road-test/#continued

And almost every time they are driving a DSG equipped model yet USA will not get it.

Please re-thing the Manual only strategy. Bad enough you won’t bring over the better looking Scirocco.

    Thanks

    • More control, really? Driving enthusiasts “prefer” manual? I am a control freak driving enthusiast and I will not buy Golf-R without the DSG.

Reasoning: DSG is more economical, doesn’t really weigh more and shifts faster than humanly possible. I’m not saying the manual isn’t fun, just that the option for both as has been rationalized well in the previous posts and needs to be offered. My next car needs to be something my wife can drive me home in, and according to my friction plates….she can’t drive stick.

VW it’s up to you, offer the DSG or I’m going with a Korean car!

  79. How much then, can I trade it in for my Mkiv with Rs4 wheels and angle eyes

  80. This has got me wondering if VW will be releasing a 2013 30th Anniversary GTI?? IMO, the 2003 20th Anniversary edition has been the best thing VW has made to date. Yeah it was a bit heavy and couldn’t hold up to today’s stats, but it was great at the time and I still love those bodies and have never seen an interior as perfect as they were.
As far as the R, I am thrilled that it’s coming with manual standard. I have to agree with some of the others here, that I suppose it’s an interesting technology, but I would never buy anything with a DSG. What I want to know is what colors will be available?? I like the blue but would like to see all the options as I am not so thrilled that it is, again, automatically leather only. I am also not so thrilled that they couldn’t do more with the engine. 250?? I mean come on…this vehicle is in the rally catagory. This can’t even come close to compeating with the new Subaru STI. I’ve never been a huge Subaru fan but I just loned my bf money to get one and I have to admit it’s pretty sweet even if it’s all leather. Manual with 3 sport modes, control over the center diffs and 305hp/290lb-ft out of a 4 cyl and he still gets mid 20s MPG! and being that he has the sedan it HAS to have that functional wing to keep it’s a$$ on the ground! lol
The R looks good but I have to admit i’m a bit dissapointed in comparison.
VW, Please pick up the pace and don’t loose your rally fans over pleasing the masses!

  82. Make it available with a DSG and 4 doors and I WILL buy one. I’ve been waiting for going on 2 years to replace my ’06 GTI with one of these.

  83. Anybody heard anything about release date? Will it be released in the Fall as a 2012 model?

  84. Finally My Dream Car Has Arrived = )

  85. IM A LIFE LONG VW FAN, I OWNED ONE OF THE FARENHEIT GTI’S BACK IN 07 AND AM HANDICAPT. I WAS PLANNING ON ORDERING THE GOLF R, BUT WITH NO DSG I WONT BE ABLE TO……… POOR DECISION VW

  86. I have waited for this car for two or three years. I am a disabled person and now that vw might finally be sending this car to the USA, they decided to send it with less HP and torque and with a manual transmission and not the DSG transmission. They are so narrow minded that they didn’t think of the disable people who like small sporty cars when they made this decision.

I guess I will have to look some place else for something similer.

    • Volkswagen won’t send us golf R with DSG.

Well take a look at the Audi Q3. I think you will forget the Golf R real quick

  87. I think it’s great. It would be even greater if they brought the Scirocco. I cannot understand why we cannot have that car in the States. Please, bring it. I am waiting for it.

  88. Respectable as the Golf line is, bring us the Scirocco!

  89. please hurry. i want the golf R soooooo badly

  90. thank you for only offering the r with a 6 speed. who wants a auto even if it is a dsg!
3 pedals forever (at least in a true performance car).
    DSG is lazy!

  91. Stop bringing over cars to impress the magazine writers and start with the cars the buyers want…Namely a 4Motion GT D w/DSG
